All emoticon’d out

images.jpgThis is getting silly now, I had a look through some past posts and I’m using bloody smilies in pretty much every other paragraph.

Yes, they add information, convey what a happy-go-lucky chappie I am etc. but at the same time I should be able to convey what I mean without having to justify / couch / support it with idiotic winks eveey time I say something.

So, I’m going on a smilie diet from now on… I’m not going to banish them but I’m also not going to use them with any sort of regularity or unless they are absolutely appropriate – which they aren’t here, all the time, everyday.

On a panel with Jimmy Wales

Fantastic, I’m going to be on a panel with Jimmy Wales next Friday at an education.au seminar entitled Challenging how knowledge is created.

Regular readers would know that while I’m in awe of Jimmy’s achievements with Wikipedia I’m not such a great fan of Wikibooks or this whole blogging code of conduct farce, so I’m looking farward to putting forward a slightly different perspective ;)

If you’re in Melbourne (or nearby) why don’t you come along? Should be a great day and they’ve got Mark Pesce to facilitate (and run a workshop after) which should also be fun.

Edublogs hearts Microsoft :)

Well, only because we have to ;)

Seriously though, the vast majority of Edubloggers are MS users and the vast majority of Word docs, presentations and spreadsheets are produced as .doc, .ppt or .xls files.

So, now when you upload or link to any of these documents to Edublogs – your readers will, courtesy of ThinkFree Viewer, be able to simply view (as well as download) the file online in a rather neat fashion.

Check out an example on the announcement.

Review of blog hosting services for educators

‘If I didn’t have my own domain and wanted to blog either with or without my students, I would select Edublogs as my blogging service.’
Huffenglish.com

Nice stuff. Will have to get into more detail one of these days about what it’s like trying to compete with Blogger / WordPress.com etc. for teacher & student blogs… actually, how do you do that… any ideas :)

Edublogs coming to San Francisco

All things going as planned I should be in San Fran from Thursday 8th March (that’s, um, four days away) until Monday 12th (four days after – funnily enough).

But not being a regular web2-SF-cruiser I thought now would be the time to beg you, dear reader, to let me know where I should stay (it has to be downtown) and who I should meet up with… you perhaps?

Drop me an email (james (at) incsub /dot/ org) [I really need to get round to putting up a new contact form] or leave a comment.
