Google Gears worked fine with my Google reader for 2-3 days (though I couldn't read in online mode) and then it crashed and I had to uninstall it.

Martin - thanks for the info.

Google Gears acting nice with my reader so far.

Coventi - oh well, I think I am too much involved already with Google Docs - difficult for me to switch anyway, also we use Writeboard - which is part of Basecamp.

1. Installing Google Gears for using Google Reader offline crashed Google Reader - I have had to uninstall, not just disable the extension in my IE browser as the MS error message suggested. I'm working on it!

2. Coventi have responded to a query about whether the product might be installed on an Intranet, behind a firewall - alas the answer is no, at least for now.
