A New Australian National Anthem

After the depressing events of Saturday (via email) we have a new anonymously penned version of the national anthem (here’s the tune if you’d like to hum along):

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we have tasted greed;
Our interest rates mean more to us,
Than mere humanity;
Our land abounds with credit cards
And John Howard took us there;
Don’t stop to count as your debts mount,
Advance Australia fair!

Don’t stop to count as your debts mount,
“Advance Australia fair!”

While refugees from terror sail’d,
To trace wide oceans o’er,
To Iraq with Little John we went,
To start a bloody war.
The sick, the old have all been sold,
Our children’s future care;
They’re all worth nowt, so rise and shout,
Advance Australia fair!
They’re all worth nowt, so rise and shout,
“Advance Australia fair!”

  1. Hi,

    I like the dark satire in your version of the anthem. However, I don’t think that it will win over the majority of voters in the majority of states.

    I believe that we do need a better national anthem and to that end I (with help from some other Australian’s) have created a new version of the national anthem. It goes like this:

    *** Australia ***

    Australians all let us rejoice
    for we are all born free.
    We are the dreaming of this land
    its spirit breathes in me.
    Our home abounds with nature’s gifts
    of beauty rich and rare.
    At every stage let history’s page
    treat all Australians fair.
    With joyful voices let us sing
    Australia is our home.

    Beneath the radiant Southern Cross
    we’ll toil with hearts and hands
    to leave our children’s children
    a whole and sacred land.
    For those who’ve come across the seas
    as friends we welcome you.
    With courage let us all combine
    to make our dreams come true.
    With joyful voices let us sing
    Australia is our home.

    The plan is “To ask every Australian if they want ‘Australia’ to be their new national anthem and in the process establish a national network that allows every Australian either directly using the internet or indirectly via a representative to have their say about, and contribute resources to, any issue that interests them.”

    You can find the more information about the proposed new anthem at http://www.anthem.net.au/index.php.

    I hope you like it.
