Development Principles for Online Courses: A Baker’s Dozen By Rory McGreal, Athabasca University from eLearn Magazine. I am not a big fan of courseware, but here goes some useful tips –

  1. Beg or borrow (steal!) courseware, or learning objects.
  2. Take what exists and build the course around it.
  3. Avoid the “not invented here” syndrome.
  4. Know the content—garbage in, garbage out.
  5. Establish realistic deadlines.
  6. Estimate your costs and double them, then double them again.
  7. Be realistic about scheduling and scoping.
  8. Be prepared for major shifts—a course development project plan must be flexible.
  9. Build for reuse and repurposing, thereby reducing costs.
  10. Build to standards.
  11. Make sure courses involve the completion of meaningful tasks.
  12. Provide different routes to learning.
  13. Diagrams and charts included in lessons should clarify the text.
