OK, so am locking in the venue and stuff for WordCamp Melbourne, and am running into two issues – firstly Howard really needs to call the election (community halls can get canceled at the last minute) and secondly I need to figure out a way to create a wireless, wireless hotspot – i.e. use a plan from a roaming wireless provider and whack it through a wireless router to provide net for everyone.
The prices for hotspots out of the box are ridiculous.
Any ideas?

I have seen this in the past on /. and the like… looks pretty cool… would definitely be something I would look into if you haven’t already…
Have fun at WordCamp… wish I could make it to the one in the US and visiting Melbourne would definitely be awesome…
Just thought of another option that might be easier… Just grab a laptop and put in the network card and share your internet access through your wireless card in the laptop effectively making the laptop an access point…
Anyways, good luck with the WAP and WordCamp…
J!
Now if you were a Mac user with a Mac friend…
I have done this a few times, one person pays for the wireless and then shares it with a friend via an ethernet cable (sharing, internet, the make the appropriate selections – it is pretty self explanatory). The friend then simply creates a wireless network which is easy peezy in OSX. Any PC luudites out there may be able to explain the process for you… :^)
James,
I’ve sent you an email, I don’t think it would be difficult at all. The other thing you may want to consider is using a caching proxy server which would speed things up considerably if multiple users are trying to access the same pages.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Richard
