Optus Cable & Port 25…. gah x 20
OK, so not entirely offline…
Have just got optus cable at the new pad , wonderful stuff getting 220 - 660 kbps but have just found out that they block port 25 so I can’t send incsub (or anything other than optusnet) email.
Crazy huh!
I s’pose I could send through optusnet with the reply to address of whatever@incsub.org but this all seems rather silly… anyone know of any workarounds?
(Oh, and if I haven’t got back to you through email today… this is why!)

Most Aussie web hosts have had their client’s SMPT services blocked by ISPs like this so they’ve opened up Port 26 on their servers to allow you to bypass the ISP block.

I’ve got OptusNet cable and manage to send and retrieve email using three different POP3 servers (I haven’t got Gmail’s POP3 up and running yet!).
All three accounts have the Optusnet SMTP server for outgoing, and then their respective POP3 servers for incoming, with their separate email addresses and Reply-Tos as need be. I’ve not had any problems in 3+ years of operation. (Eudora, MacOSX.somethingorother. It goes Meow).
Feel free to email me if you want more detail :)

Huh. Maybe I should change mine to port 26 to get past the occasional problem I find with sending mail :)

According to my hopsting provider “you can also use 8025 as SMTP port.”
I also foiund that logging into my works VPN sorted it out… not that I’d liek to do that too often ;)

I use multiple ISP’s and email addresses so find a 3rd party SMTP service far more useful than my ISP’s server.
The one I use is Authsmtp.com - http://www.authsmtp.com - plus they also support multiple ports to get around port 25 blocking!

Hi there,
I have the same trouble when sending mail through Outlook over a mail server which is not hosted by Optus.
How do I change the settings within Outlook to bypass this port blocker?
The respective mailserver only works on port 25 for smtp and I cannot send mail via Optus and port 25. What can I do?

I don’t know about outlook but it’s fairly easy on thunderbird… just look under account settings.
Sorry can’t be more help!

I had the same problem, it’s not actually blocked as such. They are “protecting us” ;D
You can unblock it at https://memberservices.o…rget=/mailfilter

Oops, screwed up that link. You can actually unblock it at:

I am also on Optus Cable and am having trouble sending emails using eMill. It wont let me set up my SMTP server mail.optusnet.com.au on Port 25. I am testing the software for a client. Any ideas?

Just found an article at http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/38004
An alternative SMTP host server can be used. The article says:
‘That won’t be necessary. Users impacted by the change who utilize third party mail services (like ours - check our forum for help), can simply re-configure your mail accounts to use smtp.frontiernet.net as your outgoing mail server in each instance. You shouldn’t need to ditch your ISP (nor should you really, since they’re fundamentally trying to do the right thing), though you may want to fire off a polite e-mail informing them such changes should be posted more conspicuously.’
