Google Reader

Google reader looks very cool but as long as I can’t import my xml subscriptions from bloglines… I ‘aint trying it and even then.. it doesn’t look like it matches/extends/simplifies the functionality in any way.

Sometimes I wonder why people don’t get it… just copy whatever Mark Fletcher (Yahoo Groups, Bloglines… could you think of more effective online communication apps???) does and you’ll be alright ;)

Duh: As Rob points out I could just save the xml file as an opml file and upload it. Tum te tum.

  1. James, I’m not sure what you mean when you say you can’t import your xml subscriptions from bloglines. I found this to be an easy process. First I saved my subscriptions from bloglines as an OPML file. Then in reader I imported the file and voila! To get to the screen to import, you need to select “My Subscriptions”, then “Add a feed”, then “import subscriptions”. Browse for your OPML file and you are done.

I think the problem with this setup is from the start screen there is no way to tell that it can import OPML – I think that the interface for Google Reader needs a lot of fixing up. To be honest, I found the UI below the standard that I expect from Google; my Bloglines account is in no danger (yet!)

  2. [...] Bottom line, from a usability perspective, the Google portal is a better feedreader than Google reader. [...]

  3. James, I found importing the subs from bloglines into google reader easy but I don’t find the google reader easy to scan fast (which I need to do with about 200 subs). I found it hard to move around and so on. I’ll be sticking with bloglines at this stage.
